Giving up is the only real failure!

business tips May 01, 2020

For a long time I thought about being an entrepreneur.

I remember when I was about 16 and Shark Tank the TV show came out. We would watch this show as a family and I even remember watching it in DECA (a high school business club). After watching this show, I kid you not, I would think about what I could invent to become a business owner.

Working for someone else was never in the cards for me. I bounced around from job to job, always looking for something better. Often in the pursuit of money or something that would make me feel whole. I always knew I wanted to help others and even went to college for nursing for a brief stint. Nothing ever seemed to fit, until I got into the world of business finance!

I worked for a company that did business lending and was pretty sure I would work there until I got a degree in Accounting. My plan was to open up my own CPA firm once I had my degree, but for the time being I was right where I wanted to be!

The problem was, after about a year, I got tired of working here too! I remember thinking something was wrong with me and began thinking about quitting. But then I got pregnant and quitting wasn't an option. So I made the best of it and when I got into my third trimester I began to look at daycare for my daughter. This is when I found out daycare would cost 50% of my take home pay and was just not an option.

This is what caused me to take the leap and start my business. I worked my business and my 9-5 job until giving birth and built my company up during my maternity leave so that just 2 months after giving birth I was able to quit my corporate job. I am happier doing this than I have ever been in my whole life, but today I wanted to quit!

These past few months have not been easy, and frankly, running a business is hard as hell without a global pandemic. So today I told my husband I wanted to quit and just go back to working in corporate. I meant this in the moment but I don't actually want to quit. You see, life doesn't magically get easier just because I throw in the towel. The bills don't magically get paid, I don't get to magically just have another job lined up, and honestly if I was to quit now things would actually get worse!

You see, giving up doesn't solve the problem it simply presents new ones. Failures and bumps in the road don't mean you throw in the towel and walk away. They are simply opportunities to stand up and dust yourself off.

Maybe you are feeling really defeated right now with everything going on, but that's not the end of it. This will pass, things will go back to normal, and you will be stronger for it! Remember, the only true failure comes when you give up!
